First made – and labelled as Cabernet Shiraz – in ’57 and ’58, believed to be the first such wine in Australia; after intermittent releases, it returns to a permanent position in the Tahbilk premium range with a 60%/40% blend.

In my Chairman’s Message in the Tahbilk Wine Club April/May 2016 Newsletter, talking about the 1957 ‘Bin 19’ Cabernet Shiraz, I stated that there were two such blends released in 1957 and 1958 under my father Eric’s tutelage, followed by a further three in the 1970’s with myself at the helm, with none made then until the release of the 2010 ‘Old Vines’ Cabernet Shiraz. My memory may have faded but not so Club Member Richard Gauntlett who emailed saying that he had an old Tahbilk carton that featured a 1988 Cabernet Shiraz label. Due diligence leafing back through the old Tahbilk label books revealed that there were in fact four Cabernet Shiraz releases from the 1970’s – one under a commemorative 1978 Australian bicentennial label – and then a further two in the 1980’s. Thanks Richard, the records have been corrected.
