The Colli Amerini DOC is located in the south of the Italian wine region of Umbria, to the west of Terni. The area is historically famous for its extra virgin olive oil and the wines of this region took a back seat to olive-oil production for many years. Until farmers realized that investment in their vineyards and cellars would complement produce from their region, the wines were rustic in style and only consumed locally. Their change in attitude was rewarded in 1989 when Colli Amerini was granted DOC status. Dry reds, whites and roses are all produced under the DOC of this area. The varietals are Malvasia and Merlot, the latter also made as a riserva. Early-drinking novello and higher-alcohol, red superiore styles are also on offer.
