Smidge Wines is the private label of one of Australia’s most exciting wine making talents, Matt Wenk. While he is best known for his role as Chief Winemaker at the highly acclaimed Two Hands stable, Smidge Wines continue to show Matt’s talent for finding outstanding vineyards that consistently deliver remarkable fruit, and transforming them to unique, small volume, world class wines.
After completing vintages in California, Adelaide Hills, Hunter Valley, McLaren Vale and France, Matt formed Smidge as a creative outlet allowing him to make wine that he was most passionate about. The 2002 vintage was Smidge’s first release and it was a single vineyard Langhorne Creek Zinfandel that launched the label. The wine was named the Tardy in honour of Matt’s reputation for time keeping and it reflects Matt’s passion for the variety, which began in his days at Nepenthe and transformed into an obsession during his time in California. Not surprisingly this wine sold out prior to release.
Since then, the Smidge portfolio has evolved into several tiers, providing a diversity of wines, while still showcasing Matt’s talents as a master winemaker and perfectionist, able to capture the delicate balance between science and art.
Independent of the names, the wines and the styles, Smidge’s overriding goal remains to give those who really appreciate wine something that is singularly enjoyable, truly special and uniquely memorable.
