Today, it’s enjoyed all over the world – and we showcase some of the very best Italian wines on our very own shelves, including a wide selection of D.O.C. quality-assured vinos (referring to a ‘controlled destination of origin’). With this in mind, sit back, relax, and enjoy the delectable taste of your new favourite drop.
Types of Italian wine
This country is known worldwide for its diversity and quality of vino. Italians produce a large variety of reds and whites, both dry and sweet, which are characterised by different types of grapes, as well as blends of several varieties.
Italian bino regions are typically divided into geographic areas such as the Piedmont, Tuscany and the Veneto region, among others, with a winding history of over 4,000 years and over 350 native grape varieties.
Some of the most prominent regions that are still producing and exporting today include:
Northern Italy – The North of Italy produces mostly reds that can be bold and tannic. The most famous region in the North of Italy is Piedmont, where Barolo and Barbaresco varieties come from.
Tuscany and Veneto – These regions are renowned for producing both white and reds – with popular varieties including Sangiovese, Chianti, Prosecco and Pinot Grigio. Tuscany is particularly famous for its production of Sangiovese grapes, which are also used in the making of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Southern Italy – Southern Italy is known mostly for its reds over whites, although there are some exceptions to this rule. This is a large area with many different types of soil, which results in many differences in the quality of what is produced in this area.
Sicily, Calabria and Campania – Each of these regions produce some very popular white varieties, like Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. Sicily is also particularly renowned for producing rich reds, such as Nero d’Avola, due to its warm climate – while you’ll find Aglianico produced in Campania.
Fun fact: One of the most famous Italian vinos is Chianti, which is derived from the iconic location of Tuscany.
