Established in 1955, Paul Osicka is Heathcote's oldest producer, and the 2022 Shiraz is a stunning, richly powerful expression of the region shaped by a near-perfect growing season.
About the Producer
Established in 1955 by former Czech vigneron Paul Osicka, this is Heathcote's oldest producer, with the 2022 vintage marking the 67th anniversary of the vineyard's planting. Today, grandson Simon tends 10 hectares of Shiraz vines, producing a rich and highly revered wine that always disappears quickly from the shelves.
Following the dry, hot 2018, 2019, and 2020 vintages, Heathcote enjoyed two good winters and a consistently warm, rather than hot, lead into the 2022 harvest. Simon Osicka ranks the season alongside 2010 and 2015, calling it a very special vintage for red wine from the vineyard.
Winemaking
Recent investment in processing and sorting equipment means the fruit is gently processed, sorted, and moved by gravity, without pumping. Only pure, perfectly ripened berries make it into the small open-top fermenters.
The wine spends around 28 days on skins before pressing and maturation in French oak vessels, 60% of which are large oak vats of 2,000 litres or more. New oak makes up around 20% of the blend. The wine was racked once before blending and bottling in June 2023.
Tasting Notes
Rich and powerful yet possessing sublime refinement, this is a stunning example of Heathcote Shiraz. It has an impenetrable inky-black, dark-purple colour with a dark purple-black tinged hue. The expressive, fragrant nose offers liquorice, violet, red and dark plum, blackberry, and blueberry, woven with vanillin cedar, choc mint, fennel, and pepper.
Rich, sleek, and powerful, the perfectly proportioned palate is expansive and plush, layering blackberry, liquorice, red and dark plum, and blueberry with spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earth, choc mint, and peppered fennel. Seamlessly integrated, velvet-smooth tannins provide the framework, while magical balance keeps the finish graceful, fresh, exceptionally long, and polished.
